A major severe weather event came through the Meriwether County area Saturday night and into Sunday morning, part of a huge storm system that spawned numerous tornadoes in Mississippi and Alabama. However, despite possible predictions of more tornadoes here, the area only received strong thunderstorms and heavy rain, along with some high winds.
Meterologists with the National Weather Service said that the most powerful areas of the storm system had dissipated somewhat before the storm crossed into Georgia from Alabama. Several damaging tornadoes were reported in states to our west, with several fatalities and injuries along with significant property damage.
In Meriwether County, however, the only damages reported were trees and branches blown over by the wind. Little property damage was noted and at press deadline no injuries had been reported.
A tornado watch had been issued for the area Saturday night to expire Sunday morning, but no rotation cells were noted by the National Weather Service. The storms did, however, dump a good deal of rain on the county.
