CHS Cavalier Baseball Team on Three-Game Win Streak

The Callaway High Cavalier baseball team has a three-game win streak going after defeating the Handley High Tigers and the Lamar County High Trojans last week. The Cavaliers are now 9-6 overall and 1-2 in region play on the season.

The Callaway High Cavalier baseball team has a three-game win streak going after defeating the Handley High Tigers and the Lamar County High Trojans last week. The Cavaliers are now 9-6 overall and 1-2 in region play on the season.
Cavaliers vs. Handley
On Monday, Mar. 17, the Cavaliers hosted the Handley High Tigers and rolled to a 7-4 victory.
The Cavaliers pushed six runs across the plate in the bottom of the first inning in the game and never looked back.
Senior Jaxon Duncan got the scoring started for Callaway when he scored on a pass ball. Junior Brody Swanson took one for the team for the second run for Callaway. Swanson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and the score was 2-0.
The runs just kept coming in the inning. With the bases still loaded, junior Wesley Williams drew a walk and the Cavaliers were leading by a score of 3-0.
Junior Luke Taylor scored on a pass ball to make the score 4-0 and then sophomore Cass Fuller stroked a hard-hit double to score two more runs and make the score 6-0.
The Tigers battled back in the top of the second and scored two runs to cut the Callaway lead to 6-2 and then scored two runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 6-4.
The Cavaliers added a run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 7-4 and held the Tigers scoreless in the sixth and seventh to win.
The Tigers did threaten to score again with the bases loaded in the sixth inning but sophomore Jackson Butts took control and got through the inning with a Tiger player crossing the plate.
Junior Blake Harrington got the start on the mound and did an outstanding job. He pitched four innings, allowed four runs (one earned) off three hits, issued four walks and recorded seven strikeouts. He also had a good day at the plate going 1 for 2 with a triple and scored two runs.
Butts tossed three innings, gave up three hits, did not allow a run, issued one walk and recorded three strikeouts.
The Tigers had six hits in the game and did not commit an error and the Cavaliers had seven hits and committed four errors.
Swanson picked up a RBI and scored a run; Fuller was 1 for 3 with a double and picked up two RBIs; Duncan scored a run; Taylor was1 for 2 with a double, a RBI and a runs scored; junior Slade Hunt was 1 for 2 with a run scored and Williams 1 for 2, with a run scored, a RBI and a stolen base.

Cavaliers at Handley
The Cavaliers made a clean sweep of the Handley Tigers when the team visited Roanoke on Wednesday, Mar. 19 returning home with a 5-1 victory.
Taylor showed his power at the plate in the game with a solo homer that got the scoring started for the Cavaliers in the top of the third inning to make the score 1-0.
Senior Junior Reeves make the score 2-0 in the top of the fourth when he scored on a pass ball.
In the top of the sixth inning Williams found his way home from third on a balk call and the Taylor came through again with a RBI ground out to make the score 4-0.
Fuller pushed another run across the plate in the top of the seventh with a hard-hit single to make the score 5-0.
The Tigers managed to score a run in the bottom of the seventh but the Cavaliers did not allow another run and earned a 5-1 victory.
Both teams had five hits in the game. The Cavaliers committed one error and the Tigers had two errors.
Hunt went the distance on the mound for Callaway. He pitched seven innings, allowed one run off five hits, issued one walk and recorded five strikeouts.
The Cavaliers had seven stolen bases in the game.
Taylor was the man of the hours at the plate going 1 for 4 with a solo home had two RBIs, scored a run and had a stolen base; Harrington was 1 for 3 with a stolen base; Swanson was 1 for 1 with a stolen base; Fuller was 1 for 3 with a RBI; sophomore Corday Mclean scored a run and had a stolen base; Butts was 1 for 3 and Reeves and junior Kieron Pope both had a stolen base and scored a run each.

Cavaliers vs. Lamar County
Callaway junior Slade Hunt came through with a walk off hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to plate senior Jaxon Duncan and lift the Cavaliers past the Lamar County High Trojans before hometown fans on Thursday, Mar. 20.
The Trojans drew first blood in the game pushing four runners across the plate in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The Cavaliers fought back in the bottom of the inning when senior Junior Reeves doubled to score two runners and cut the Trojan lead to 4-2.
Junior Wesley Williams scored on a pass ball in the bottom of the sixth in an inning that produced three runs for Callaway.
Freshman Carter Pelt tied the score when he came through with a RBI single and then a Trojan error allowed the Cavaliers to take the lead in the game with the score standing at 5-4.
The Trojans wouldn’t go away and scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to tied the score again.
It was in the bottom of the eighth when Taylor came through with the walk off single that gave the Cavaliers a 6-5 victory.
Callaway pitchers held the Lamar County batters to seven hits in the game and the Cavaliers had six hits. The Trojans had an error and the Cavaliers did not make an error.
The Cavaliers dominated the base path in the game with nine stolen bases. Duncan and Reeves had three stolen bases each and junior Kieron Pope, senior LaShun Gates and Williams all had a stolen base each.
Junior Blake Harrington was 1 for 4 at the plate for the Cavaliers with a double; Pelt had a RBI; duncan was 2 for 4 with a run scored; Reeves was 1 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored; Pope was 1 for 4; Gates scored two runs; junior Slade Hunt was 1 for 5 with a RBI and Williams was 1 for 2 with two runs scored.
Harrington pitched six and two-third innings for Callaway and allowed five runs off six hits, issued five walks and recorded nine strikeouts and Duncan pitched one and a third innings and did not allow a run, gave up one hit and issued one walk.

Up Next for Callaway
The Cavaliers traveled to Macon on Tuesday to play the Rutland Hurricanes but results from the game was not available at press time.
Today, Thursday, Mar. 27 the Cavaliers will host the Rutland Hurricanes at 5:30 p.m. and on Friday, Mar. 28 Callaway will return to Macon to face the Hurricanes again at 4:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Apr. 1, the Cavaliers will travel to Jackson to play the Jackson Red Devils at 6 p.m.
