March 2, 2026, at a nursing home in Warm Springs, family, friends, nursing home staff, and fellow residents gathered together to celebrate the long and precious life of Mrs. Dora Mae Tiller as she marked an extraordinary milestone — her 100th birthday. A full century of memories, faith, perseverance, and love.
Mrs. Dora Mae was born on March 2, 1926, in Gay. As a young girl, she moved with her mother to Woodbury after her mother married Mr. Thomas Prather. Dora Mae was the oldest of her siblings — Douglas, Upton, Annie Lee, and the youngest, Francis. Each of them has since passed on to heaven, but their memories remain forever cherished in her heart.
At the tender age of eight, Mrs. Dora Mae joined the Baptist Church at Red Oak, beginning a lifelong journey of faith and devotion. She graduated from high school and, at eighteen years old, set out to find opportunity beyond her small hometown. Traveling with her uncle to Florida, she sought work and a new beginning. Her journey led her to Haines City, Plant City, Lakeland, and Tampa.
While working on Davis Islands caring for children, the pay was low, but the experience was priceless. Those early years helped shape what would become her life’s calling. Seeking better pay and greater opportunity, she moved to Miami. Mrs. Dora often described Miami in those days as “nothing but orange groves and farming.” She witnessed the transformation of a quiet town into a thriving city.
Determined to build a stable future, she attended school for home care nursing and secured a live-in position with a wealthy family, where she remained for many years. She once shared that she lived with them in what was then the first motel on Miami Beach. Working with this family not only provided stability but also allowed her to travel across America, broadening her experiences and perspective.
During her years in Miami, she witnessed thousands upon thousands of Cuban refugees fleeing the communist regime of Fidel Castro. She saw history unfold before her eyes as the city grew and changed.
Mrs. Dora Mae met her beloved husband in Haines City. Together, they built a long and loving marriage and opened a small community market that served their neighborhood. Tragedy struck when her husband was killed in an apparent robbery by neighborhood teenagers. After his death, she dissolved the business and continued forward with strength and grace.
For more than five decades, Mrs. Dora Mae dedicated her life to caregiving. After retiring, she embraced life with the same determination she had always shown. She joined a traveling club and visited every state in the nation except Alaska. Her journeys also took her to many countries around the world, fulfilling dreams that many only imagine.
Over the course of her remarkable century, Mrs. Dora Mae lived through some of the most defining moments in modern history. As a young girl, she survived the hardships of the Great Depression. She witnessed the invasion of Poland by Adolf Hitler, which led to World War II and the tragic loss of six million Jewish lives during the Holocaust. She was alive when aviator Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. She saw the crime spree of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. She lived to see mobster Al Capone imprisoned for tax evasion. Over her lifetime, she lived under seventeen United States presidents — and her favorite was Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Mrs. Dora Mae, you have done more than most people could ever dream. You are an inspiration to your family and friends. We are beyond grateful to have you in our lives, and we cherish every single moment we spend with you.
Happy 100th Birthday! You have truly been a blessing. We thank God for the wonderful years He has granted you, and we pray that He continues to bless you with good health, happiness, and many more beautiful days ahead. May your 100th birthday be as fabulous, graceful, and extraordinary as you are — a celebration worthy of one hundred amazing years.
What an incredible century of memories and experiences.
