The American Friends of Lafayette established a Bicentennial Committee to commemorate the thirteen-month bicentennial celebration of Major General Lafayette’s triumphant return to America.
The Bicentennial Committee consists of over 500 individuals representing the 24 states Lafayette visited between 1824 and 1825. Their mission is to educate citizens, young and older about the life and legacy of Lafayette, to celebrate the Franco-American Alliance, and to enrich public knowledge through meaningful programming and remembrances, inclusive of every cultural and ethnic background.
August 16, 2024 saw the kick off this monumental Bicentennial celebration with hundreds of events planned to trace Lafayette’s footsteps on the exact dates and in the exact order he followed on his original tour of America as the “Guest of the Nation” between 1824 and 1825.
He visited Georgia between March 21 – March 31, 1825, arriving in Savannah he travelled to such communities as Augusta, Warrenton, Sparta, Milledgeville, Macon – Indian Agency on the Flint – passing through the Talbot-Taylor County area to Fort Perry in modern day Marion County to Uchee Creek and across the Chattahoochee River to Alabama.
While this is historical story is very important for our entire country, it is also a very significant part of our local history as well. Major General Lafayette passed through our area and some of the sights he may have passed by are still in existence. Over the next few months, the Taylor County Historical Society will share more information and details of this exciting commemoration for you to enjoy.
There will be dinners, parades, speeches, displays, and all types of activities at each of the stops along the way. Once the brochures are printed, we will make them available.
