Meriwether Sheriff Named in Civil Lawsuit Over Fatal Crash

Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith was named in a civil lawsuit regarding a fatal traffic accident involving one of his deputies.
The accident took place on Highway 85 near Senoia. According to available reports, a Meriwether County Deputy was on his way to work at the time and allegedly was driving more than twenty miles an hour over the posted speed limit. The deputy’s vehicle was not running its emergency lights, according to the suit.

Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith was named in a civil lawsuit regarding a fatal traffic accident involving one of his deputies.
The accident took place on Highway 85 near Senoia. According to available reports, a Meriwether County Deputy was on his way to work at the time and allegedly was driving more than twenty miles an hour over the posted speed limit. The deputy’s vehicle was not running its emergency lights, according to the suit.
The deputy’s vehicle struck a car driven by Ronald Moreland, 61, who was attempting to make a left turn. Moreland died from injuries received in the accident.
Moreland’s family has filed a civil lawsuit against the sheriff, saying the deputy – whose name was not released – had been acting recklessly and that Smith bears responsibility for the incident. The suit claims wrongful death and negligence in the accident.
