Meriwether Superior Court Sees Postponement of Cases
The murder cases of Brandon Smith and Jordan Alvin Simon were rescheduled during Meriwether Superior Court on Monday.
Among the cases on the calendar was Qua’vion Cooper, a former Manchester High football standout. Cooper is charged with malice murder in the death of Brandon Smith, also a Manchester High football player. Smith was shot and killed on Dec. 7, 2023 and found on Dec. 10 near his home on Third Avenue in Manchester.

The murder cases of Brandon Smith and Jordan Alvin Simon were rescheduled during Meriwether Superior Court on Monday.
Among the cases on the calendar was Qua’vion Cooper, a former Manchester High football standout. Cooper is charged with malice murder in the death of Brandon Smith, also a Manchester High football player. Smith was shot and killed on Dec. 7, 2023 and found on Dec. 10 near his home on Third Avenue in Manchester.
According to police reports at the time of Cooper’s arrest, it was determined that Cooper aided and abetted A’darious Williams, who shot and killed Smith, following an argument.
Williams pleaded guilty on May 6, 2025 to malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and weapons possession charges. He was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
Cooper’s case was postponed until May 4.
Also the murder case of of Jordan Alvin Simon, 14, who was found dead off Rocky Mount Road near Luthersville on Sept. 25, 2024, was rescheduled until May 4 as well.
Three defendants – Thaddeus Stokes, Jamarion Mondrez Ford and Maurice Jamarcus Malone – will stand trial in the case.
Several other cases of interest were rescheduled.

Commissioners Restrict Bridge to Local Traffic
The Meriwether County Commission decided to close a bridge to all but local traffic after discussion regarding large vehicles which exceed the bridge’s weight limit using it.
A request to close the bridge on Massengale Mill Road to through traffic was approved after discussion showed that even though the bridge has a three-ton weight limit, dump trucks and tractor-trailers use it on a reoccurring basis. The reason is road work being done on Georgia 362, causing traffic to detour in that area. The Commissioners discussed a concern that the bridge will continue to be used as such even after the road work on Ga. 362 is completed. In the end, the Commissioners approved closing the bridge to all but local traffic through placing barriers to large vehicles on either side of the bridge, allowing room for the vehicles to turn around before reaching it.
Opposition In Every Race For County Commissioner
Qualifying ended last week for the local races including seats on the Meriwether County Board of Commissioners for the May 19 election and there is opposition in every district race.
Manchester Council Asked About Updates From City Departments
Diane Spencer kicked off the Manchester City Council Meeting on March 10th with her suggestions regarding city updates. Spencer stated that citizens appreciated the information they used to get from the department heads, and while she understands that a major factor in moving their reports to the work session deals with financial reasons, it would be nice to receive the information still. Presentation was also noted as vital in cases such as certain departments getting new equipment. Ms. Spencer proposed that items such as this news, vacancies, new hires, events, and statistics be listed in the monthly newsletter.
