Troup Commissioners Approve Hogansville Annexation Request

The strong thunderstorms that plowed through Meriwether County Sunday afternoon and Monday morning caused tornado warning sirens to go off and funnel clouds were reportedly spotted, though no initial reports of a tornado touching down had been received at press deadline.
The Woodbury City Council extended the city’s moratorium on zoning requests for another 120 days at their meeting on March 24. Mayor Ronnie Garrett told the Council that the previous moratorium had expired on March 22, and while progress is being made on updating the city’s zoning ordinance, the revised ordinance was not yet ready for reading and adoption. Garrett said the moratorium extension was necessary to prevent any confusion, and the Council unanimously approved extending the moratorium for 120 days.
The Meriwether County Commission voted to approve utilizing a software program called Agenda Packet to prepare meeting agendas and share with the public. During the discussion, Commissioner Bryan Threadgill said he was concerned that agendas and packets are not official until they are approved by the Commissioners, and items could be in the packets that have not been approved. Threadgill said the packets would have to be sent to the legal department each time before being released to ensure nothing was there that had not been approved.
Troup County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating the death of an inmate at the County Jail last weekend.
Prior to the March 17 Hogansville City Council meeting, two public hearings were held, with citizens being able to respond if they chose. In the first hearing, Paul Jarrell of the Three Rivers Regional Commission gave a five year update on the city's Twenty Year Comprehensive Plan, which helps establish Hogansville's vision for the future. It looks at a priority list for the city and determines what needs to be changed or addressed, on topics such as housing, land usage, tourism and transportation.
Manchester called their monthly council meeting to order on March 11th with a celebratory gesture. The Manchester Recreation Department had three age brackets in basketball make it to championships this season. Players and coaches were commended and honored at the council meeting and presented with certificates of recognition for their outstanding achievement.
A major severe weather event came through the Meriwether County area Saturday night and into Sunday morning, part of a huge storm system that spawned numerous tornadoes in Mississippi and Alabama.
The Meriwether County School System will hold a “Pre-K and Kindergarten Roundup” with registration and and open house on Saturday, March 22, from 9 a.m. to noon.
