Hogansville Council Discusses Chisel Mill Annexation Request

Prior to the start of the of the regularly scheduled April 21 Hogansville City Council meeting, a public hearing was held about the proposed annexation, rezoning and map amendment for the Chisel Mill Development that would be built on Bass Road. Melissa Griffis spoke about the proposed annexation of approximately 21.17 acres into the city that will be combined with property already available for a potential 85 single family unit development. The site would be rezoned from SFMD (single family medium density) to CRMR (corridor medium density residential). The development would offer more open space and green space than what is required. No citizens chose to comment on the development which will be discussed again at a future meeting.

Sheriff’s Office Gets New K-9

Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith announced the addition of a new K9 officer to the Sheriff’s Office as part of the department’s K9 program. Sheriff Smith made the announcement on Thursday, Apr. 24.

County Commission Decides to Extend Recreation Facility Grant

The Meriwether County Commission last week decided to move forward with a plan for a recreation facility and put another decision on recreation issues off until the May 5 meeting to get more information. A discussion which began at the April 7 meeting about a planned recreation facility near Greenville was continued at the April 22 meeting, with the Commissioners discussing the $200,000 grant applied for in 2022. The grant required an equal match from the county and a proposal had been submitted for the use of the grant, but nothing further has been done. County Clerk Allyson Stephens said she had checked on the grant to learn what could be changed, and she told the Board that the grant could be used in phases, it can be extended, but the location of the facility cannot be changed.

County Cleanup Saturday

The annual spring countywide cleanup day has been scheduled for Saturday, April 26 and the location of dumpsters has been announced, according to Keep Meriwether Beautiful Executive Director Jane Fryer. The clean up effort will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.

Hogansville’s Holland Ware Park Funding Approved By Commission

Hogansville’s Holland Ware Park received funding approval by the Troup County Commission last week and is expected to be completed next spring. The Holland Ware Charitable Foundation approached the City of Hogansville and the Troup County Commissioners with the proposals of investing $1 million in the park provided the City of Hogansville and the Board of Commissioners match the funding dollar-for-dollar. Hogansville and the Troup Commissioners have agreed to match the funds on an equal share of $500,000 each.

Manchester Council Discusses Central Business District

Manchester's Mayor and Council initiated their meeting on Tuesday, April 8th with a discussion regarding the expansion of the Central Business District. Mayor Mark Trimble noted that the state statute states the governing body may change the designation of downtown development to a geographical area within municipal corporation. Any changes would not affect any projects prior to the decision to adopt a resolution.

Commissioners Discuss Recreation, Roads, More

The Meriwether County Commission met Monday, April 7th, and discussed roads and recreation among other topics. An agenda item concerning the LWCF Project for a recreation facility in Greenville was discussed. The county had received a $200,000 grant in 2022 for a recreation facility near the county seat, with an equal match from the county, but no further progress had been made on the facility. In the interim, construction costs and materials have seen price increases, and the Commissioners voted to table any further discussion until the Recreation Department can look into what options are available. The discussion centered on reducing the scope of the project or proceeding in stages, but it was not clear if the grant would cover those ideas.

Troup Commissioners Approve Hogansville Annexation Request

On Tuesday, Apr. 1, the Troup County Board of Commissioners approved an annexation request for the City of Hogansville, provided details of maintenance for Bass Cross Road can be worked out.

Weather Causes Tornado Scare in County

The strong thunderstorms that plowed through Meriwether County Sunday afternoon and Monday morning caused tornado warning sirens to go off and funnel clouds were reportedly spotted, though no initial reports of a tornado touching down had been received at press deadline.

Woodbury Extends Zoning Moratorium

The Woodbury City Council extended the city’s moratorium on zoning requests for another 120 days at their meeting on March 24. Mayor Ronnie Garrett told the Council that the previous moratorium had expired on March 22, and while progress is being made on updating the city’s zoning ordinance, the revised ordinance was not yet ready for reading and adoption. Garrett said the moratorium extension was necessary to prevent any confusion, and the Council unanimously approved extending the moratorium for 120 days.
